159. Curious People — Aneel Aranha

Hello and welcome to The Hope Podcast. I'm Aneel Aranha. Today, we will talk about the often-overlooked virtue of curiosity and its role in our spiritual growth.

Curiosity is typically associated with children or scientific inquiry, but it's also a valuable trait for our faith journey. A curious spirit keeps us engaged, open to learning, and in awe of God's creation.

The Bible is full of curious individuals. Consider Zacchaeus, who was so curious about Jesus that he climbed a tree to see Him (Luke 19:1-10). His curiosity led to a life-changing encounter. The Bereans were commended for their curiosity, as they "examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true" (Acts 17:11).

Even Jesus demonstrated curiosity. As a child, He stayed behind in the temple, "sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions" (Luke 2:46). His questions often challenged people to think deeply about their faith and actions.

Curiosity can deepen our relationship with God. It prompts us to ask questions, explore the Scriptures more thoroughly, and seek a greater understanding of our faith. Proverbs 25:2 says, "It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings." God invites our curious exploration.

So, how can we cultivate holy curiosity? Start by approaching Scripture with fresh eyes. Instead of assuming you know a passage, ask questions: What might I have missed? What does this reveal about God's character? What does this have to teach me?

Practice wonder in your daily life. Take time to marvel at the intricacies of creation. As the psalmist says, "Great are the works of the Lord; they are pondered by all who delight in them" (Psalm 111:2).

Be curious about others' perspectives and experiences. This can foster empathy and understanding, especially with those different from us. It reflects the heart of God, who is intimately interested in each of His children.

Remember, curiosity doesn't undermine faith; it can strengthen it. As we seek answers, we often discover the depth of God's wisdom and love. Our faith becomes more robust when it can withstand and even welcome questioning.

Embracing curiosity can lead to a more vibrant, engaged faith, dear friend. It keeps us humble, acknowledging that there is always more to learn about God and His ways. Your curious spirit can inspire others to dig deeper into their faith as well.
