158. Gentle Does It — Aneel Aranha
Hello and welcome to The Hope Podcast. I'm Aneel Aranha. Today, we will talk about how gentleness can be a powerful force in our lives and relationships.
Often, gentleness is mistaken for weakness. However, true gentleness requires great strength and self-control. It's not the absence of power, but the intentional tempering of it.
Jesus, the epitome of strength, described himself as "gentle and humble in heart" (Matthew 11:29). His gentleness didn't diminish His authority; rather, it drew people to Him. Even in confronting wrongdoing, Jesus demonstrated a gentle spirit, offering restoration rather than condemnation.
The apostle Paul lists gentleness as a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). It's a quality that grows in us as we allow God's Spirit to work in our lives. Peter encourages believers to explain their hope "with gentleness and respect" (1 Peter 3:15), recognizing that gentleness can open hearts where harshness might close them.
Gentleness manifests in various ways. It's in our words, choosing to speak with kindness even when delivering hard truths. It's in our actions, treating others with respect and consideration. It's in our reactions, responding to provocation with calm rather than aggression.
So, how can we cultivate gentleness? Start by recognizing its value. In a world that often equates strength with harshness, choose to see the power in a gentle approach. Practice empathy, trying to understand others' perspectives before reacting.
Be gentle with yourself, too. Often, we're our own harshest critics. Treat yourself with the same kindness you'd offer a friend. This self-gentleness can then overflow into your interactions with others.
Remember, gentleness doesn't mean being a pushover. Jesus, while gentle, also stood firm for truth and justice. Gentleness is about how we carry ourselves in all situations, combining strength with kindness.
Scripture tells us, "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger" (Proverbs 15:1). Your gentleness can be a powerful force for peace in your relationships and communities.
God bless you.
