Psalm 048 - Mount Zion - Aneel Aranha

Great is the LORD, and most worthy of praise,
in the city of our God, his holy mountain.
Beautiful in its loftiness,
the joy of the whole earth,
like the heights of Zaphon is Mount Zion,
the city of the Great King.
God is in her citadels;
he has shown himself to be her fortress.
When the kings joined forces,
when they advanced together,
they saw her and were astounded;
they fled in terror.
Trembling seized them there,
pain like that of a woman in labor.
You destroyed them like ships of Tarshish
shattered by an east wind.
As we have heard,
so we have seen
in the city of the LORD Almighty,
in the city of our God:
God makes her secure
forever.
Within your temple, O God,
we meditate on your unfailing love.
Like your name, O God,
your praise reaches to the ends of the earth;
your right hand is filled with righteousness.
Mount Zion rejoices,
the villages of Judah are glad
because of your judgments.
Walk about Zion, go around her,
count her towers,
consider well her ramparts,
view her citadels,
that you may tell of them
to the next generation.
For this God is our God for ever and ever;
he will be our guide even to the end.

You have surely heard of Mount Zion. Have you wondered what it is? Mount Zion is a hill located in Jerusalem, Israel. It is mentioned many times in the Old Testament and considered a very holy site. In the Bible, Mount Zion is often associated with God's dwelling place and his chosen people.

In the psalm we are singing today, Mount Zion is described as the "city of God" and the "place of the Lord's dwelling" (Psalm 46:4). Elsewhere, it is also referred to as the "joy of the whole earth" (Psalm 48:2) and "the perfection of beauty" (Psalm 50:2).

In the New Testament, Mount Zion is used as a symbol of the spiritual kingdom of God and is contrasted with the physical city of Jerusalem (Hebrews 12:22-24). It is described as the "heavenly Jerusalem" and the "city of the living God."

Since it is a symbol of God's presence and kingdom, a place of security and salvation, we can take comfort in knowing that God is always with us and that we have a secure place in his kingdom. We are invited to come to Mount Zion, to draw near to God, and to worship him in spirit and truth (Hebrews 12:22-24). This means that we can approach God with confidence and receive grace and mercy to help us in our time of need (Hebrews 4:16). 

Mount Zion also reminds us that we are part of a community of believers, a holy nation, and a people belonging to God (1 Peter 2:9-10). This calls us to live in unity, to love one another, and to serve one another with the gifts that God has given us (1 Corinthians 12:12-27). Overall, Mount Zion reminds us that our hope is not in earthly wealth or possessions, but in the eternal inheritance that we have in Christ.
